With just under two months to go, excitement is building as surfing’s elite performers prepare to return to KwaDukuza for a seventh successive year when the Ballito Pro kicks off from 29 June to 5 July. The event has been making headlines lately with announcement of a brand new title sponsor: iconic international surfing brand Billabong.
The Ballito Pro presented by Billabong is a QS10,000 rated event on the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS). The third of nine events that carry the highest ranking on this year’s QS, the Pro offers a US $250 000 (approx. R3 million) prize-purse and an invaluable 10 000 points on the world rankings. It will feature a 96-man field of the world’s best surfers from every corner of the planet, all of whom are striving to qualify for a spot on next year’s WSL Championship Tour (CT).
Collette Bundy, event co-ordinator for the Ballito Pro, paid a visit to the Radio Life & Style studio on Thursday to give the Morning Drive team the latest updates on preparations for the Pro. Collette spoke passionately about the positive spin-offs that hosting an international event of this calibre creates for the local economy and for the profile of the KZN North Coast as a world-class surf and tourism destination. She also promised to keep Radio Life & Style in the loop with any breaking news on the surf event going forward, as well as to partner with the Life & Style media brand to promote the Ballito Pro both leading up to and during the surfing event.
