Some business ideas materialize from research and focus groups, while others emerge from the love of creation. Melissa’s emerged from a passion for wholesome food made with real ingredients as you would at home. Melissa opened her first store at the young age of 24 and since then the business become a household name with stores across South Africa, but still grounded by its founding principles. The company is launching its first KZN store at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre this month.
In 1996, young and newly married, Melissa’s husband Mark suggested she open a small shop selling things she loved and had baked that day. Shortly thereafter, they stumbled upon their first Cape Town premises around the corner from their flat and set up shop. The day the store opened, Melissa baked all the rusks and crunchies herself and lovingly packed and labeled them for sale. “I had no idea how to run a restaurant but people actually came and loved it and naturally ended up spending more and more time there. I had to figure out a way to feed them. For me, the most obvious solution was to feed them as I would guests at home.” And that’s how the famous Melissa’s buffet concept began.
The Ballito branch will be open all day, serving breakfast, lunch, light meals and coffees plus the welcome addition of wood-fired pizzas and craft beer. Melissa’s feels like a home away from home with great quality food and beautiful gifts & homeware in a welcoming, relaxed setting. Melissa’s opens at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre mid-August.
